The Grand Design - Is Hawking saying God's not needed

Have not been blogging for a long long time. Thought I will get back to it.. Read an article today about the new book by Stephen Hawkings.

Stephen Hawking is releasing a new book - The Grand Design - is due on Sept 7th.

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing," the author writes. "Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist. It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going."

He further writes "Because gravity shapes space and time, it allows space-time to be locally stable but globally unstable. On the scale of the entire universe, the positive energy of the matter can be balanced by the negative gravitational energy, and so there is no restriction on the creation of whole universes"

Does he mean that modern physics "
leaves no place for God in the creation of the universe," or that "God did not create the universe,"

If he is saying that Gravity created the space-time then what created gravity, how is gravity distinguished itself from the larger Electro Magnetic Force and how did EMF come into being in the first place? These are the some of the question I hope he answered in this book (which I will buy read as soon as it is released)

If we all agree that Truth is only one, then Science and Spirituality can't exist separately they need to overlap completely - then how do they overlap - is Science a sub-set of Spirituality? Science will probably will not agree with that as long as we stick to the dualistic definition of God. In any algebraic equation, X is a means to the solution not the solution itself. Dualistic spirituality stops at X as the God, Science says "No - an equation is only complete when X is revealed"

Almost Every single Upanisad has dealt this subject in detail and not very surprisingly Modern Science is coming to very similar conclusions as done by Advaitam and Sankhya. Except that Vedanta says that you can't create anything from nothing - some thing has to exist for creation to manifest and that some thing - for lack of better English word - is God.

I do hope the great minds like Hawkings spend some time researching in Vedanta which will help him to to unravel this issue in new language called Science.

Cheers
